Joyful Movement
I’ve had people ask about working out and intuitive eating and how we can reconcile those things.
This is where we need to separate working out from weight loss. I spent YEARS working out to alter my body. Now I workout in ways that FEEL good to me.
For me that means, lifting, climbing, yoga, ecstatic dance, sometimes pilates or running or a random class!
The difference is the the why.
I used to want to alter the way my body looked. Now I want to feel good and learn new ways Of moving. And listen IT’S A JOURNEY. I don’t feel that way everyday. Some days are harder than others but it’s a PRACTICE. We can gently remind ourselves that our bodies don’t need to look a certain way or be a certain size to be worthy.
Ask yourself “WHY am I working out?”
Am I working out for the results?
Am I working out because I want to feel good?
Am I working out because I want abs?
Am I working out because I want to try something new?
We live in a results oriented society. We love achieving things, but it’s also the reason lots of people don’t move their bodies. Often people do it for the usually WILDLY unrealistic results and when that doesn’t happen they throw in the towel.
We don’t need to be focused on the results or all or nothing nature of fitness our society loves to put on us. You don’t have to run a marathon to be a runner. You don’t have to squat hundreds of pounds to go to the gym. Start with where you are and do what you can. Listen to your body, listen to what would make it feel good!
Intuitive eating absolutely supports joyful movement! It’s actually one of the main principles of intuitive eating. You should feel good in your body and movement is an incredible way to facilitate feeling that way.
